INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — The Missouri Department of Labor fined HyVee in Independence for employing two children under the age of 14.
According to the Missouri Labor Department, a complaint was received in January regarding violations that occurred in November and December of 2011 at the HyVee
...more on Noland Road in Independence. After an investigation, the Missouri Labor Department fined HyVee.
In addition to employing the two children, the Missouri Labor Department said HyVee also did not have work certificates on file nor did they have a posted list of child employees or maintain personnel files.
According to the department’s website, violations of Missouri’s Child Labor Law are a class C misdemeanors, which are punishable by up to 15 days in jail, a $300 fine, or both.
The Missouri Labor Department has referred the case to the Jackson County prosecuting attorney for possible criminal prosecution.

JACKSON COUNTY, Mo. — Rescue workers have recovered the body of 85-year old Gladin Harrison, who drowned in Lake Jacomo Tuesday evening.

“He loved fishing. He loved hunting,” said Teria Jenkins, Gladin’s cousin. “He was self-sufficient. He took care of himself. He took care of other people. If you called him any time of the day or night, he would always be there. He was a great swimmer and it’s very confusing to us how it happened.”
The man who survived was in the water about 30-45 minutes before somebody heard him yelling for help, the Jackson County Fire Department said. He was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover.
